Good films, but not a patch on the books. I'd highly recommend the Silmarillion. It is alledgedly a work of pure imagination, but it ties in with so much of our ancient mythology (pre-official history) that one may ask the question as to whether Tolkien had access to knowledge hidden from the rest of us...
